First, let's understand how heat transfers from one object to another. Heat basically is an atom vibrating very fast. So that energy transfers when one atom hits another atom. That means that The denser the substance is, the faster heat will transfer.This is because the atoms will be more likely to hit other atoms if the substance is denser, because the possibility of an atom hitting another atom is much higher if it does not have lots of space to move.

Therefore the best insulator is a vacuum, where there are no atoms to transfer the heat to.
