There are basically 3 major point of sale companies:
-Micros
-Aloha
-Aldelo
I've made a lot of research before i got a POS system for my restaurant. As far as I've seen if you are not opening a chain restaurant there is no need for micros or aloha system. They are over-priced and charge a lot for tech support. Since we are located in NYC i chose a company in our neigborhood andso far we are very pleased with both the system and the company's customer service. Here is their website:
www.uniquepos.com
We got an Aldelo system from them. I got quotes from more than 10 companies and they had the best prices. The tech guy came in and did all the cabling, installation even training and they didn't charge us for that. I def recommend Aldelo and UniquePos.
