do the pieces of my story fit together as a whole
A paragraph is a unit of text; it is made of sentences that connect to one another. Likewise, paragraphs support/connect to one another and together make up a written work, whether it is an essay or a story or something else. Paragraphs help organize writing, combining similar ideas together and developing key ideas that the work aims to convey. Organizing writing into paragraphs helps readers understand the work better- it is much easier to read text broken up into paragraphs rather than one long "block" of text, and paragraphs can also help with understanding how ideas are related.
Phrases like "moving on to the next point," "building upon that idea," "in addition," and "now, let's consider" help link different parts of a presentation together and maintain a cohesive flow. They signal transitions and guide the audience through the content smoothly.

Some common conjunctions used to join simple sentences and form compound sentences are "and," "but," "or," "so," and "yet."
One long block of type is boring! Paragraphs are used to group sentences that go together, within an overall topic. You also separate writing into paragraphs so that you can understand who is speaking.
As a 5th grade teacher I required at least 3 paragraphs with four sentences each paragraph. A intro paragraph, a main body, and a summary paragraph. Not sure how many words that is because I was looking for topic sentences, details, and if the paragraphs flowed together as a consistent thought answering the prompt they were given.
Most sentences will not need both "and" and "then" in order to be a complete sentence. Either "and" or "then" can be used to join sentences together when needed.
