history of workmen compensation
In the opening scene, a group of workmen are apprehended by some tribunes. The workmen are shown to be workmen by having their lines written in prose, in contrast to the tribunes' parts which are in verse. Tribunes were not nobles (indeed only plebeians could become tribunes), but they have greater authority than the workmen. In addition, they are the ones saying, "Think about the meaning of what you are doing" when the workmen are saying "Party on!" As more sober and serious people the tribunes speak in verse. Prose is not always an indicator of low social status: virtually all of Much Ado About Nothing is written in prose.
