Hamsters are indigenous to the desert were they burrow and bathe in the sand. domesticated hamsters (such as pets) use wood shavings to substitute the sand as a burrow. Many pet stores carry sterile sand that is used to bathe the hamsters but many hamster owners such as my self just give their pet a bath in the tub with a little water.
