A Servant of the Lord
Mary (Luke 1:38) ". . .And Mary said, Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her."(KJV)
Ancilla Domini is Latin for handmaid of the Lord as in the scripture passage: Ecce ancilla Domini, fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum which means "behold the handmaid of the Lord, May it be done to me according to Your word. "
ancilla domini is Latin for "handmaid of the Lord"
"Behold the Handmaid (or Bond Slave) of the Lord. Be it done to me according to your word."
Mary said" I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done onto me" that allowed Jesus to be born.
This refers to Mary's willingness to serve almighty God by bearing Jesus Christ in her womb. She was indicating by this statement that she was willing to undergo this task, with the resulting consequences, as God's 'handmaid'. This was effectively as a personal servant to almighty God, and in so doing she thus became the mother of God, as in Jesus Christ, in His incarnation, but not of course in terms of His essential being since He existed before the world was created. She, as God's handmaid was not just indicating her personal humility, but also her position as a creature, subordinate to God.
The narrator is Offred, a Handmaid.
"Behold, the Handmaid (or Bond slave) of the Lord. Be it done to me, according to your word."
In the Bible, Sarah's handmaid was Hagar.
