What is a haptonema?

A haptonema is a "flagellum like" structure arising from the cell apex near the other flagella. It contains several microtubules. Its exact function is unknown, but is thought to aid in attachment, feeding, or avoidance responses. A haptonema is a defining characteristic of a haptophyte.
