The spinal cord runs down your back from the base of the brain down to the level of your abdomen. It contains bundles of nerve fibers (axons) that connect the body to the brain, and also neurons specialized for the initial steps of sensation and the final processing necessary to control movement. The spinal cord is soft and fragile, but well protected by surrounding bones in the vertebral column. Certain injuries, most commonly due to traffic accidents and gunshot wounds, can damage the spinal cord. The first effects of this injury are acute. After time, the injury either heals (if it was not severe) or it becomes chronic, and perhaps permanent. The profound consequences of permanent spinal injury (leading to problems like paraplegia) have motivated a lot of biomedical research, but best is to avoid the accident.

The spine is the column of bones, cartilage, muscles, ligaments and tendons between the head and the tailbone. There are 7 cervical vertebra (the neck), 12 thoracic vertebrae and 5 lumbar vertebrae (the back), the sacrum and the coccyx (or tailbone) that sit between your hip bones.

A spinal injury could cover anything from a minor muscle injury to paralysis.

Dorsal merely refers to where the part is... in this case it is the area of the cord closest to the skin on your back...

Why does a crush fracture of a thoracic vertebra rarely result in damage to the spinal cord?

In a crush fracture, the vertebral body collapses. This may not cause displacement of intervertebral (IV) discs or any of the verebral components. Thus, the spinal cord is unlikely to get injured. Crush fracture of the body indicates collapse, and so long the vertebral arch and IV discs are not dirupted the spinal canal will not be compromised. But that may also be applicable to all regions. The thoracic region however as it is convex posteriorly, collapse of the vertebral body will simply increase the convexity.

Why elevate an injury?

How can you become paralyzed?

It is usually due to some damage to the central nervous system. Some diseases, such as polio, had that effect. So will a physical injury that damages a major nerve pathway. An example would be a fracture (break) of the spine that cuts the spinal cord.

What is the treatment for a fractured vertebra?

This depends on the type of fracture, whether there was any impingement on the spinal canal or neural formina, and any resultant neurologic deficits. For compression fractures without any impingement or neurologic deficits, frequently the treatment is pain medication. If there is possible impingement on the spinal canal, surgery may be necessary, and if there is neurologic deficit or abnormalities, surgery is necessary, as well as steroids. A brace may also be used to help stabilize the spine while healing takes place. You should consult your orthopedic or spinal surgeon about the recommended treatment for your fracture.
