An historic site is usually a place where an event in history has taken place or a place which was built or has a mark of some kind left there from the past. Examples of famous historic sites include the Great Wall of China, the Colosseum, Petra, the Giza pyramids, Alhambra, Checkpoint Charlie, Machu Picchu and Gettysburg Battlefield. Also, places which are still in use today - such as Buckingham Palace - can be considered historic sites.

Another category of historic site might be a place that commemorates an important event in history, such as a memorial. For example, The Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington DC commemorates those who fought in this conflict.
