Usually it is a flywheel with a clutch to spin up the engine.

In some installations they use a small low power electric motor to keep it spinning

This allows the backup generator to start producing power in less than a second

On some large engine piston/propeller aircraft a small starter engine spins the flywheel and engages to spin the engine once the flywheel is up to speed.
