The kitchen helper is the jack-of-all-trades of the restaurant world. He or she must know how to do a bit of everything in all areas of the restaurant.
Duties
A kitchen helper helps wherever needed in the kitchen and may be asked to:
* wash, peel, and cut vegetables, fruit, and sometimes meat
* help the cook with any food preparation
* keep kitchen neat and orderly and sanitize work tables
* keep refrigerators, stoves, and cabinets clean
* wash dishes and/or pots and pans
* sweep or mop floors as needed
* take trash to the dumpster, clean trash cans, and replace liners
* put away food deliveries in storage areas, refrigerators, and freezers
* help dining room staff as needed
The size of the restaurant and the number of staff may have an influence on the duties of a kitchen helper.
Requirements
A kitchen helper learns on the job but those interested in a profession in food service may take vocational classes or other training.
A kitchen helper should know how to operate a dish machine, sanitize properly, and be able to work with harsh chemicals. He may be required to use grills, fryers, slicers, and set up the steam table. He should be willing to accept new duties and responsibilities. The hours are often long in hot and steamy conditions. He needs to be able to lift heavy loads and be on his feet for long hours. A kitchen helper does much of the grunt work in a restaurant and needs to be friendly and willing to take orders.
Advancement
Kitchen helpers often move up to become cooks, dining room bussers, or servers. Many kitchen helpers are students or workers looking for part-time hours and the turnover is high. As more people eat out and the population grows, the need for kitchen helpers should increase.
Earnings
Most kitchen helpers start at minimum wage. Full time employees may receive insurance and vacation benefits. Most establishments offer one free meal during work hours.
