Koalas have little to no effect on the plants in their environment. They eat eucalyptus leaves and blossoms, but this action does nothing to help disperse the seeds. At most, their claws scratch the bark of the trees they climb, but this does not affect the plant for good or for bad.

Alot of people will tell you the Koalas role in their environment is the spread of eucalyptus. However, koalas do not eat the seeds of the eucalyptus tree, they only eat shoots and leaves and therefore are not spreading the eucalypt seed. Koalas are rarely hunted by other wildlife so they are not here for that purpose either. Koalas are basically gardeners.. they eat the eucalypt leaves which helps to trim back the trees, eating up to about 1000 leaves per day (500gm to 1kg). Eating that many leaves in a 24hr period means they digest almost just as much, creating a natural manure for the bush to thrive in.

Although koalas are cute Australian native marsupials, they do not actually play any significant part in helping the planet. They are not a keystone species, and there are other species which feet on eucalyptus leaves. Their main value is in helping to promote tourism in Australia.

Koala's don't really do much to help the environment. They eat eucalyptus leaves which are toxic to most other animals.

What happens when a change occurs in an ecosystem?

The koala's habitat is decreasing dramatically, and with it, the population of the koala itself is also decreasing. Koala habitats are decreasing primarily because of increased urbanisation and housing developments. In the past, farming and agriculture destroyed many areas of koala habitation, but in recent times it is urban sprawl which creates the greatest threat. Also, introduced predators have encroached upon the koala's habitat. Foxes and dogs are a major threat to koalas in their native habitat.
