A long-term disability is an illness or accident that impairs you from working and earning an income for a period of 3 months or longer.

Lon-term disability insurance will pay a monthly benefit in case you can't work for three months or longer.

Benefit period is usually 2 years, 5 years, or to retirement age (age 65, 67). The waiting or elimination period is generally 90 days or 180 days, after which benefits start.

Individual long-term disability premiums are not tax deductible, but paid with after-tax money; therefore the benefit will not be taxable.

The only disability insurance premiums that are tax deductible are the business expense and overhead DI (BOE/DOE) and Buy-Sell DI, as well as Key-Person DI.

If person has 2-3 year longterm disability insurance and becomes disabled and can't work and is under 60 for example which Federal agency benefit would kick in. Is it after two or three years?

If a person with a 2-3 year long-term disability insurance becomes disabled and unable to work before the insurance benefit period ends, they may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) through the Social Security Administration. Eligibility for SSDI benefits is determined by the severity of the disability and the inability to engage in substantial gainful activity. It is possible for SSDI benefits to kick in before the expiration of the long-term disability insurance coverage.

Is prolonged the same as longterm?

No, not really, but Prolonged is sort of a word to use when someone has a dragging illness or something. Good question. Something that is longterm is permanent but something that is prolonged will go on for a while and eventually stop. EX: the longterm effects of smoking are____. The Prolonged illness went on for 3 years but then it was cured.
