Greek myths were the center of Greek life because people made up stories to explain why things happen, when people got scared about something they would make up a story to face their fear, and they made up stories about heros, gods, and goddesses.
well good question. In Greece mythology wasn't just fake stories made up for entertainment but it was the Greek way of life and what that means is the gods and goddesses explained daily life
One major component that made up Ancient Greek culture was slavery. The Greeks were also deeply religious people with many gods and goddesses whom they worshiped.

The English word "mythology" (stories of gods, goddesses, and legends) is derived from Greek mythos (legend) and logos (account).
She did not die because she is a goddess and they are immortal. She was only forgotten. There is actually no evidence that the Greek gods and goddesses even existed in the first place. They were made up to explain the ways of nature.
All the Greek gods and goddesses had Roman names, with the exception of Apollo and Calypso, maybe more. The Romans were intrigued with the Greek legends and stories,so they made up their own gods with close relations with the Greeks, but with different names. In case you didn't know,Poseidon's Roman counterpart is Neptune.=)
What happend to start Greek & Roman gods & goddesses was, the Greeks would experience alot of natural phenomenons (ex. Rain, Hail, Tornadoes, etc.) and emotions (ex. Love, Hate, Sadness, Jealousy, etc.) and needed an explination for it all. So what happend was they came up with gods & goddesses to explain all these 'happenings' to make themselves feel better. But then, The Romans came and heard about them. They learned the stories and took them out of Greece into Italy. When they retold the stories, they changed the names of all of the gods and goddesses to make them seem like they made them up. So I guess that also answers the question 'Why do Greek gods & goddesses have different names but are the gods/goddesses of the same thing?' --You're Welome.(:
There are a lot of of Greek gods and goddesses, but I don't know exactly how many. Probably about 75-100. The early Greek people made them up and made up stories about them to explain things like the changing of the seasons, sunrise, sunset, etc. They were powerful and each were a patron to something and had a symbol. For example: Artemis is the goddess of the hunt and her symbol is a bow and arrow.
To find explanations to natural events and try to decide what causes them.
That answer is completely unknown, as the first stories were told by word of mouth.
