What is a magic mushroom trip like?

Much like any other experience, it depends upon YOU and your state of mind. One person might go to a party and have a lot of fun, another might be miserable and feel overwhelmed by all the stimuli.

I will attempt to describe three main components: The visual, the mental and the physical.

Generally you will experience visual hallucinations. To the best of my knowledge, these seem to be caused by a "swirling veil" of color in a pattern that appears over your regular vision. Objects seem to breathe and to melt, or turn into other things like animals. Staring into a mirror can be quite an amazing experience if you can keep in mind your face is not actually melting or morphing into whatever you see.

There are so many things you can do on a mushroom trip, each one can be as different as a trip to an amusement park is from playing a card game with your grandmother. Group or individual relationship dynamics are very important, I would never want to partake in such an adventure with people I did not trust.

The mental trip is the one that is most highly dependent upon your own mind, but can be influenced by your environment of course (because your mind is). I prefer to make sure everything is "safe". That is, I have access to food, water, warm clothes, a safe place where I don't have to worry about strangers or police. It is very hard to describe the mental trip, but your mind makes connections in a way it does not normally. You might find yourself making amazing creative connections between thoughts you never imagined possible and no one has ever proposed to you before. The brain activity is very high during a mushroom trip and lots of parts are working in unison that are normally segregated. It may make you feel like a genius, or it may make you feel confused, or both!

The physical trip is usually for me not as pleasant. My lips and tongue tend to feel drier and a little swollen. Skin just feels weird, maybe a little dirty. A shower can be quite nice. Usually I am distracted by the mental and visual trip so that I don't think about it too much. Mushrooms tend to make people fart and it is best to let it out as holding in the gas can lead to stomach upset which is no fun in the psychedelic state. Mushrooms are actually a mild toxin and can upset the stomach as well, sometimes causing coughing, dry heaves and/or vomiting. Usually this only lasts a few minutes and the rest of the trip can be enjoyed.
