Ipswich is in the Bremer River catchment, and some of its suburbs lie where the Bremer meets the Brisbane River. There are six other major waterways within the Ipswich council area: Bundamba Creek, Purga Creek, Reynolds Creek, Warrill Creek Mihi Creek and Western Creek. Ipswich itself is surrounded by hills rising to mountain ranges, and some of these mountains are remnants of volcanoes, long since extinct. Ipswich also lies along a rich coal seam, resulting in quite a few unsightly coal slag heaps around the city's outskirts. Underground coal mining has caused some subsidence.
