A woman has two egg sacs called ovaries. Every month, one of the ovaries releases an egg, which floats down the fallopian tubes and into the uterus.

The uterus builds up a lining of blood and tissue to cushion the egg. If, at the end of the month, a male sperm cell has not fertilized the egg, it, along with the protective layer of blood and tissue, will be flushed out of the woman's vagina.

A slow trickle of blood will flow out, for around 5 days. That is what's known as a woman's "period."

Afterwards, the monthly cycle will start again, with a new egg being released from the ovaries.

If a male sperm cell DOES fertilize the egg, then a fetus will start to grow, and in 9 months the woman will give birth to a baby.
