What it is, is a inclusion body in almost all cells where hydrogen (in two carbon fragments of sugar) and oxygen are combined - converting ADP into ATP for energy within your cells.

What it was, was probably a bacteria that was swallowed by an early eukeryotic cell but instead of being digested it learned to live there ... and has been doing so for about a half billion years.
