The main highway between Melbourne and Sydney is the Hume Highway, named after Australian-born explorer Hamilton Hume who, together with William Hovell, explored between the Yass Plains and Port Phillip Bay in 1824.

The Hume Highway is the quickest way to travel from and to Melbourne and Sydney, travelling the inland route. The other highway which runs between the two cities is the Princes Highway, which essentially follows the coast.
On Hume Highway it'll be 73 miles. Though, that highway has tolls.

The best route from Canberra to Sydney is: * up Northbourne Ave to the Federal Highway * from the Federal Highway, join the Hume Highway * continue along the Hume Highway until you reach the Southwestern Freeway and continue along until it becomes the South Western Motorway * From this point, follow the signs to find which part of Sydney you wish to reach It is a journey of 288km from Canberra to the Sydney CBD, and will take about 3 hours and 45 minutes to travel - again, depending on which part of Sydney is your destination.

15 minute drive on the glace bay/ sydney highway
The most logical route from Sydney to Orange is out along the Great Western Highway, to the Western Motorway, before rejoining the Great Western Highway. Then turn in to the Mid Western Highway before exiting on to the Mitchell highway. This will take you to Orange, a journey of about 254km, and 3hours 45 mins.
Pacific
Travelling via the Pacific Highway is quicker. From Sydney to the Gold Coast via the Pacific Highway is a distance of 851km, with a driving time of around 11 hours (without breaks). Although one is more likely to encounter roadworks on this route, new bypasses that take a traveller around some towns have continued to improve travel time along the Pacific Highway. From Sydney to the Gold Coast via the New England Highway (taking in the towns of Warwick and Armidale) is a distance of 1001km, with a driving time of around 13.5 hours (without breaks).
