Why does myelination create speed?

This question could probably be asked more clearly. Myelinization of a nerve fiber helps the nerve's signalpropagate more quickly. Think of the nerve cell as a length of wire, and the myelin as the rubber insulation on the wire. Each nerve cell allows an electrical signal to pass down it's axon. If there is insulation around the nerve (myelin) then the signal is contained within the nerve cell, and passes quickly to the end of the nerve cell. Demyelinated nerve cells do not have this insulation keeping the electrical signal in the cell; so the signal can travel to adjacent cells. The net effect is that the signal either never reaches the end of the intended axon (such as with multiple sclerosis), or the signal takes longer to get there.
