Near the sea, attap is a thatch made from usually bamboo splits wrapped with Nipa leaves/frondlets and thonged with bamboo skin to hold it together. Further inland, elephant grass or other grasses/rushes are used to make attap. Nipa is the tree (Nypa fruticans) and called the nipa palm, attap palm or even mangrove palm.
