It is a term often used by neurologists or pshychologists to refer to a malfunction of normal brain activity in the learning process. It's probably called nonspecified because it could or has shown problems in multiple or unidentifiable areas. In the case of multiple areas of learning disability, an example would be not only a problem with proper function for, say, mathematical reasoning, but also in the reading processes which is done in a different part of the brain. The term should be used as a diagnosis following comprehensive testing of the brain and thinking and learning processes. The range of severity could be from very mild, not affecting an intelligent child at all, to (worst case senario) severly impeding the normal processing of information and the prevention of age appropriate learning. Don't panic. My advice would be to obtain test names and results (You have a right to them.) and contacnt Parents as Partners or another organization that can help you understand the problems and determine appropriate action to take to help the patient that has this diagnosis.
