Jesus' parables were stories from everyday life use to illustrate a spiritual point or message. To keep those blinded by their pride in the dark, and to bring into the light those who were humble in heart.
One parable that Jesus taught was about two men. The first man bought land on a sandy plot. He then proceeded to build a huge castle on it. The only problem was that since it was on a weak foundation, when the wind and the rain came, the whole house was destroyed.
The second man bought land on a large, solid rock. He then built a dinky little house on it (it wasn't much to look at, I suppose). When the wind and the rain came, the house stood firm because it had a solid foundation.
The moral of the story is that it is better to have a shack on a rock (the rock being Jesus Christ and his deity) than a castle in the sand (the sand being anything but the first). Jesus Christ must be the foundation, or when hard times come we will have nothing to hold to.
Our Blessed Lord's parables were short stories used to impart the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven to those who believed in Our Blessed Lord, while leaving those outside in the dark. For a complete list of parables in the New Testament, see Parables and Parabolic Images in the Gospels.

PARABLE. A short story based on a familiar life experience used to teach a spiritual lesson. It resembles the fable and the allegory. Jesus used the parable many times in His public ministry. “Why do you teach them in parables?” His disciples asked Him. “Because,” He replied, “the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven are revealed to you, but they are not revealed to them” (Matthew 13:10-11). It was a means of teaching His doctrine especially to those who accepted Him as Messiah.
