A paralegal is a somewhat elevated administrative assistant that helps an attorney do some of the 'grunt work' that is involved with the legal process. Writing leins, pleadings, communication with other attorneys, judges, and clients will/can go through the paralegal as well. Some paralegals are Certified, meaning they actually have a 'practice' of sorts and can operate their own license under the attorney. Most are not, but there is at least 1000 hours of training, whether it be on the job or in a classroom setting, to prepare an individual to be a paralegal.
