a parasite, like a mite or a flea
The relationship between a dog and a flea is called parasitism. Parasitism is a relationship between an organism and a parasite in which the parasite needs the organism to live. Without host, adult fleas can only live about two weeks. An example of a close living relationship, like fleas on dogs, is the Oculotrema Hippopotami, which is a parasite that lives in most Hippopotamus' eyes and gets rid of the algae in them. Also, many birds live near Hippos and stand on their backs for a great deal of the day to rest there while catching birds, but they also eat the bugs off of the Hippo's skin.

A parasite is an animal that lives on another animal. The animal it lives on is called it's host. The parasite could jump on and jump off, like a mosquito, or it could live there permanently, like a louse. The parasite gets something off the host, some benefit. For a flea, for example, the animal it's on, say a dog, provides it with food (blood), shelter (skin/fur), and breeding grounds (if there are other fleas). The dog usually gets very itchy and sometimes even diseased from fleas. The parasite, the flea, benefits from the relationship and the host, the dog, is hurt (to some degree) by the relationship. That is the parasite host relationship, +/-.

It looks kind of like a pimple, or zit, but there is a parasite worm under it. Look it up on google images if you can spell it right.
A parasite. These could include insects and pests like fleas and ticks, or things like tapeworms. I also believe that certain types of ivy and mistletoe are parasitic as well.
