No you certainly do not need one. Most of the really good players do not use a pick. You can use a felt pick, I do occasionally use one if I have a problem with a finger, such as a really bad hangnail or a broken nail.
A pick up is a connection device that can be connected to an amplifier to allow the music to be put through speakers.
It will certainly increase the wear on the strings. And the hard plastic will scratch the finish up faster than using fingers. But there typically won't be a problem, but most prefer to play the ukulele without a pick.
No, but they are in the same plucked lute category of stringed instruments. Many compare it to a guitar, in that they are very similar in shape and in the method of playing. The ukulele usually has 4 strings and a guitar typically has 6. The ukulele is much smaller.
That depends on the type of instrument you are talking about. An electric ukulele used pickups and no sound hole is required. However, an acoustic ukulele is going to need to have holes to provide volume by allowing the sound to project out of the instrument.
You should tune it every time you pick it up to play. A new instrument, or one with new strings, will take a while to settle in. Tuning often will help it settle and make sure you are getting the right notes when you play.
