A data point in a database is referred to as a field. It represents a single piece of data about a specific entity or object within a database.
The smallest piece of data is called a "bit," which stands for binary digit. A bit can represent a value of either 0 or 1, serving as the fundamental building block for all digital information. Bits are combined to form larger units of data, such as bytes, which consist of 8 bits.
They are so called because inside the blue casing or whatever you call them is a round floppy piece of material used to store the data on, when the 1.4 disc is inserted the metal piece slides open and data is then stored on the flat piece of material
