What is a population pyrimad?

It is back-to-back, horizontal bar charts of the population classified by age and gender.

You have a vertical axis, which represents age groups as categories. On one side you have horizontal bars representing the male population in each age band, and on the other the female population. As you go up the chart, the ages increase and the bars become smaller, which gives the chart its its characteristic shape and therefore, its name.
