The word pousada comes from the verb "pousar" which means "to land " and in Brazil, unlike Portugal, it refers to small independent accommodation, in all price categories, which in other places would be called bed and breakfasts (B&Bs), guesthouses, inns, eco-lodges and boutique hotels.

There are thousands of pousadas spread across Brazil , the majority of them outside big cities, with some of the best hidden gems located completely off the beaten track. All pousadas are unique and reflect the taste and style of the owners who frequently manage the pousada themselves and live in or close by.

Prices are similar to those for hotels and resorts of a similar category, but the atmosphere in pousadas tends to be much more informal and many offer a combination of charm, personality and superb location rarely found in larger resorts or hotel chains.
