A ramjet is a type of jet engine which uses the engines forward motion to compress air rather than using a rotary compressor like a standard jet engine. Since ramjets depend on forward motion to operate they cannot function below a certain speed.

This minimum functional speed is usually quite high, and so ramjets are not practical as a primary propulsion system, but once they do begin to function they are able to generate more and more power as their speed increases and are capable of speeds up to mach 5.

Above speeds of mach 1, scramjets are more commonly used (supersonic combustion ram jet) as the air flows through a scramjet at supersonic speeds, increasing thrust though the air needs to enter the engine at supersonic speeds.
