"ping" will test for connectivity to a device at the Ethernet Address Level...but that does not mean the device's software is actually talking to the network or responding to the network. "ping" WILL tell you the device is wired up and has power applied to it's network interface board.
Polling checks a remote network device or service availability via a SNMP protocol and report the information found on the network device and /or service back to the system where polling was initiated.
nslookup is a network command that returns the IP address of a device on the local domain.
Ipad as a wifi device will connect to the network which is near by..if the network is free of charge than its free.

A MAC address is a unique identifier given to network devices when running on a physical network. To find out the MAC address of a network device on a Windows 8 laptop press the key with the Windows symbol on it to bring up the splash screen. Type in CMD and then press enter to bring up the command prompt. Within the command prompt window type in the command 'IPConfig /all'. Check the information on each of the network devices that have been detected and the Physical Address, which is six sets of two hexadecimal characters, will provide the MAC address of the network device.
A network ready device is a device that has the potential to connect to a network, natively it isn't connected to a network, nor is it a network, but with the appropriate configuration and possibly with the addition of components could be connected.
