It's a well-rounded character; one that is a complete, consistent person, with a complete set of characteristics, eccentricities, mannerisms etc. Main characters have to be fairly well-rounded characters.

A round character is one who does not merely fit into a stereotype (stock character or flat character). A round character is more developed than a flat character. A background of some sort is usually given, and reasons are provided for the character's actions.

A round character is a major character in a work of fiction who encounters conflict and is changed by it. Round characters tend to be more fully developed and described than flat, or static, characters. If you think of the characters you most love in fiction, they probably seem as real to you as people you know in real life. This is a good sign that they are round characters.

What is the difference between round and flat characters?

There isn't that big of a difference between round and flat characters. For example, both are needed for the story to go on. The differences between them are that the author does not go that in depth when describing flat characters. Also, flat characters don't show as much emotion as round characters do. Lastly, the reader tends to know a lot more about a round character's personality. As stated in the article Weedflower written by Cynthia Kathoda "Sumiko stared at him then shocked herself by bursting into tears. Sumiko is a perfect example of a round character because she shows deep emotion. To conclude, round characters tend to be main characters while flat characters are usually side characters.
