What is a sagamite?

Sagamite was a foodstuff used by the natives of Canada as an emergency food when moving cross country. The later French hunters used it for the same purpose. It consists of hulled corn (hominy) boiled with copious amounts of animal fat. It provided must needed energy in the harsh winter months when other food was in short supply.
