There are many areas for microbiologists to specialize in such as medical research that helps advance medications, understanding of how viruses work and how to better treat and diagnose conditions.
Within the realm of the microbiology field there are many names for the various specialties. Bacteriologists devote time to the research and study of bacteria and its effects on the body or other organisms. Some microbiologists may study algae or other plant life to understand how it functions or how it can be used. Virologists study the field of viruses and how the attack the body and help to work to find ways to combat them.
On average, microbiologists earn between $38,000 up to $48,000. Entry level microbiologists may earn slightly less while experienced ones may earn significantly more. Those who specialize in a particular field may earn wages above the average and can include research grants and additional awards.
Microbiologists may do independent research but many either work within a company or hospital or for government bodies. Clinical research is also available depending on the specialty chosen. Those who work in public health may research food safety or food borne illnesses. Some microbiologists may also help to develop vaccines for humans or animals.
To begin in the field of microbiology a Bachelor’s degree is often required but many who go on to specialize in microbiology attain a doctorate in that field. Those who have only a Bachelor’s degree may find that advancing in the field of microbiology can be difficult unless they choose to receive additional education. In some cases it is not uncommon to have more than one doctorate depending on the field chosen in order to better understand the nature of the organisms being studied. An example of this would be having a medicine degree as well as a doctorate for those who extensively study organisms for medical purposes and research.
