Arid means "dry", semi means "half". An area that is dry enough to be a "half desert" is semi arid.

Semi-arid is a land classification based on annual average rainfall, usually between 250-400mm per year.
An Arid Landscape is a landscape that lacks water or moisture, usually due to low or lack of annual rainfalls.
Arid landscapes are parched, dry lands that cannot ideally support plant growth. Deserts are arid landscapes.
Arid land is area where there is so little rainfall plants and animals either don't exist or are sparse and impeded in growth. Deserts are arid, but other areas with little moisture are also.
