Many years ago, "sobriety" used to refer to being very serious; but in modern times, it has come to refer to an alcoholic's effort to abstain from drinking. An alcoholic who is in the midst of his or her disease is frequently drunk. The opposite of being drunk is being sober. Thus: John is glad he is not drinking, and he is very proud of his sobriety.
