The Columbia Encyclopedia 6th edition, published in 2008, is a single-volume reference work.
Work on the first edition began around 1860 under the auspices of the Philological Society. Later the huge undertaking was heavily subsidized by the Oxford University Press. The original 12 volumes were published between 1888 and 1928, followed by a supplement in 1933. A second edition, in 20 volumes, was published in 1989. This, too, has been followed by supplements.
