Spelled "shadoof." A shadoof is a cantilevered lever used to draw water from wells, ponds or rivers from a waterproof container, such as a bucket, suspended by a rope from the unweighted arm of the lever. The weighted end, on the other side of a raised fulcrum, is on a shorter arm and offsets half the weight of a full container of water. On the longer end, a person pulls on the rope to pull down the container and its supporting arm.
