Spelled "shadoof." A shadoof is a cantilevered lever used to draw water from wells, ponds or rivers from a waterproof container, such as a bucket, suspended by a rope from the unweighted arm of the lever. On the longer end, a person pulls on the rope to pull down the container and its supporting arm.
