A Shih Tzu's natural instinct is to lounge around on the cushiest pillow in the house while waiting to alert its pack members on any approaching non-pack members. They are loyal and good. They are an ancient breed and have many wolf-like instincts that can be viewed thru certain behaviors. Males are stubborn and females are typically less domineering. They tend to be very food motivated which is useful when training.
