Use a skillet to cook things, like hamburger patties or grilled cheese Sandwiches that need to just be turned over when browned. You can also stir fry vegetables to the right temperature. I also make gravy in my frying pan by adding water and flour to the fat or vegetables I cooked earlier.

For all intents and purposes, they are interchangeable terms today. Many years ago, "skillet" was a frying pan with little feet attached (sometimes also called a "spider") but that was yesteryear. Today, it simply means a frying pan.

Yes. Iron frying pans used to be called "skillets" and the name just remained through the years. You can use a regular frying pan for nearly every recipe that calls for a skillet.
