If it was about 18 - 22 inches tall and had a long pink beak, it was probably an American White Ibis, Eudocimus albus. Many gulls also have black tips on their wings. Black pigment makes the feathers more wear-resistant.
The first bird that pops into my head is the Tufted Titmouse. It is mostly grey with a crest on the top of its head, (like the Northern Cardinals crest, only a different color), a white breast/front and the white on its wings. I hope that this was the bird that you are looking at. :>)

A medium sized star becomes a red giant or a white dwarf - depending on the circumstances. If the star collapses further than the white dwarf it can supernova or become a blackhole. Supernova'd stars rarely become blackholes - the density of what is left is nowhere near the density a blackhole needs to be born.
