A drain cleaning snake, also known as a drain auger or plumber's snake, works by inserting a long flexible cable into a clogged drain pipe. The cable has a corkscrew-like tip that helps grab onto and break up the clog as it is inserted and rotated. By turning the handle of the snake, it pushes the cable further into the pipe, allowing it to break apart and clear the clog.
The hood release cable snakes into the cabin of the car through the firewall. To replace the cable remove the old wire. Zip tie the new cable to the old one and pull it out. This will easily snake the new cable into place. Install the new cable on the release and lever.
There is not speedometer cable on a 1996 Honda Civic. There is a throttle cable. Top replace this unhook it from the throttle body and gas pedal. Hook on the new cable to snake it through the firewall. Properly hook the throttle cable to the gas pedal and throttle body.
The cable is 3/4 to 1 inch diameter with a head that expands with the rotation. For a 3 inch drain you use a powered auger that turns the cable.

If it is not in the trap, then it usually can only be located by "snaking" the pipe with a plumber's snake, a length of braided steel cable with a pincer or spiral spring end. The snake can be pushed through the pipe easily until it meets the obstruction, where it stops. Rotating the snake then bores through the obstruction, or, alternately, latches on to it so it can be pulled out.
There are both industrial and home owner cable pulling techniques. The former may involve heavy equipment and cable greasing and many people. Pulling cable on a small scale involves a snake and sometimes a pull cord. A snake is a coiled metal strip that you push through the conduit. When it comes out the other end or to a pull box you connect the wire and pull it back through the conduit. If more wire might be pulled later, also attach a pull cord so it will be left behind in the conduit for future use.

remove front wheel and inner fender on the driver side. remove the kick panel on the inside. unbolt the cable handle. remove plastic cover from the hood latch and remove ball end of cable. unclip cable retainers, about 4 in the engine area( mark frame to identify holes before removing), 2 in the fender well. pull straight out and reuse. once cable is loose, cut cable, remove bracket and tape old cable to the new one, using it to pull new cable through all the holes to the front- easier than trying to snake it through. put it all back together. takes about an hour
