A sail on a spacecraft which uses light to push it, the way a sailboat uses wind on its sail.
As far as I know, they're still only theoretical.
The concept of a solar sail was proposed by physicist Johannes Kepler in 1610. However, the first successful demonstration of a solar sail in space was the IKAROS project by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency in 2010.
Install solar panels instead.Lower the sail and get out the oars.
Of course not.
Yes. Any suitably large object can be used as a solar sail, so that the charged particles push the sail away from the sun, just as a ship moves in winds on Earth.
bool
Yes, just as wind on Earth transfers its momentum to the sail, pushing the boat foward, solar wind, which are very fast moving charged particles, transfer their momentum to a shuttle's sail.
Now that the solar sail is open and working the spacecraft appears to be heading for Mars
Solar Sail... maybe... we're still working on that one.
sail
There are sail planes, sail boats, sail cars, and with a spaceship you could sail to the stars.
sail
Sail me that Frisbee, would you? Do you sail? You sail!
