A farrier should come in weekly to replace the horse's shoes and remove any unhealthy parts of the hoof, the equipment they use does not hurt the horse, though it may look like it does, and the horse should get used to the process and be quite calm when the shoeing is taking place. The farrier should come regularly, and he should only have to shoe horses in work, not horses that are kept out at grass. If the horse is kept out at grass or has gone lame, or for any reason is out of work, then they should have their hooves picked out every morning and every night by either the owner or the person who looks after the horse. If the horse's hooves are too small they cannot have shoes. You can keep a working horse barefoot, and farriers do that too.
