A spect-actor is a term coined by Brazilian theatre practitioner Augusto Boal to describe an audience member who actively engages in a performance by reflecting on the themes presented and even participating in the action. This concept promotes the idea that theatre can be a tool for social change and that the audience plays a significant role in the performance.

How was Greek theatre created?

It started as a religious festival to honor the god Dionysis. Early Greeak theatre were hymn-type passages that were recited by a large chorus. Later on, Thespis, introduced the concept of an actor. He would have one person, that would respond to and intereact with the chorus. Other playwrights extended this idea. Eventually one actor became two, then three, etc.
