ATA/ATAPI-7 -Serial SCSI standard is compatible with serial ATA drives in the same system
AHCI offers some optimizations over IDE (ATA Mode), mainly, Hot-Plugging and Native Command Queuing (NCQ). In a multi-threaded environment, AHCI should outperform ATA, however it has been argued that in a single thread benchmark, ATA could outperform AHCI. For home users, the noticeable difference would probably be negligible.

The ATA standard that uses a serial cable is SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment). SATA is used for hard drives, optical drives and other such storage devices.
No its not ATA is a interface standard not a type of hard drive the only difference between Ultra ATA and a diffrent inerface standard is that it can use the 80-conductor cable or serial ATA cable
A "serial to parallel" converter converts a serial data connection to a parallel data connection. For example, in computer storage, there are controller chipsets that convert SATA (Serial ATA) to PATA (Parallel ATA, also called IDE or EIDE).
Serial ATA (SATA) the newer and faster standard. Parallel ATA (PATA) provides for up to four devices, including the hard drive. The serial ATA standard allows for more than four drives installed in a system. by: MGVR

That is Serial ATA. The ATA stands for Advanced Technology Attachment. The standard was called ATA until there were serial ATA drives, then the old way became known as PATA or Parallel ATA. The problem with the old ATA standard was that with the 40 pins, it was difficult to go faster than 133 MB/S. Keeping the same instruction and data format, but converting to a serial data standard allowed the data rate to be safely increased to 150 MB/s. Now the 3rd generation of SATA allows a data rate up to 600 MB/S.
