When a star forms, it is a cloud of dust and it takes about a million years to do that. After it catches fire, it will burn and become a star. After it burns for millions of years it will evolve into a sun then the sun turn into a giant, then a supergiant, then explodes and turns into a very bright star called a white dwarf and new stars are born from the remains. Each stage takes about a couple of million years and as the stars get bigger, they will get dimmer. The same thing will happen with the sun in our solar system but it won't happen for a couple million years.
