Stealth bombers remain visible to the naked eye, the "stealth" part comes from its decreased visibility to a radar. The plane's design (both its shape and the materials used) is such that it reflects radar signals in a way which makes it more difficult for the machine to detect it.

This in turn makes targeting and attacking the bomber difficult, even if it can be normally seen.

Stealth bombers are made 'invisible' to radar by coating them in a special layer that absorbs electromagnetic waves in the radio waves section of the spectrum.

Another tactic they use, particularly on the F-117, is creating angular shapes to scatter returning radio signals, reducing the strength of return signals and obscuring their origin.

These two tactics make it much harder (but notimpossible) for hostile radar sites to obtain a fix on the craft's position, and makes it harder for enemy weapon systems to attain a lock.
