A stone knife is a knife made from a piece of rock. Flint and obsidian are the preferred stones although others are used. By hittting them against another piece of rock, they can be broken so they have a sharp edge. Then they can be placed in a handle and used as a knife. Very good knives can be made that way. Metal knives last longer and can be more easily made to standard sizes.
When stone tools get larger, they become far less efficient. The same tree it takes a man half a day to fell with a stone axe he can chop down in a few minutes using a steel axe.
