Does low suction pressure have an effect on reciprocating compressors?
At very low suction pressure, the suction valves of reciprocating compressor will not work and there will be no gas in the cylinder during compression stroke, resulting some damage to the suction valves. If low suction pressure trip protection is not provided there can be some abnormal damage.
What is the difference between suction lift and suction head?
Suction lift is only negative. Suction head is positive or negative.Suction head is the distance between the surface of the liquid being pumped and the centerline of the pump. It can be positive or negative, and it can be affected by pressure or vacuum on the surface of the fluid. A negative suction head is also called suction lift.Example 1: A D/A under 15 psig is set 20 feet above the feed pump the effective suction head is 54 feet. The effective suction head (lift) is -15 feet.* (28"Hg = - 31 feet of water)Example 3: A sump pump is set 4 feet below the surface of the well. There is a low pressure switch located on the suction accumulator/drier which is located under the hood of the engine compartment. Standing in front of the engine compartment look straight down a little to your right up close to the engine radiator and see the drier. There are 2 refrigerant lines and an electrical connection on the drier, this connector is connected to the low pressure switch on the drier. Hope this helps you. Serg.............

The type we used to use on the job, had filter material inside of it which would flow down the suction line if you reversed it. It was made to only filter in the specified flow direction.
